Donner Pass in California's High Sierra Mountains is named after the tragic events of the Donner party in 1846. Immigrating to California, the party's wagons became stuck in an early winter storm. Unable to move, the pioneer families had to wait out and survive the winter with few provisions. Once the food supply ran out, many of them turned to cannibalism. Twenty years later, the Transcontinental railroad was built along the same wagon trail route. Tunnels along the route were constructed by Chinese laborers. Using picks and black powder, they cut through the hard granite. Many died in this labor.
The trains are gone and the tunnels abandoned. People exploring these tunnels report seeing strange apparitions, the feeling of being watched and unseen hands tugging on their clothes.
When I took this image, I didn't notice the strange swirling light you see in this photograph. Maybe the legends and stories are true?
